Jeremy Wotherspoon to be Coach at Inzell Academy
Sport Navigator.NL is excited to announce that from this date Jeremy Wotherspoon will be joining their effort to broaden development in the sport of speed skating. Wotherspoon, who announced his retirement from competition, will take on the role of head sprint coach at the "International Speed Skating Academy” in Inzell (Germany). Programs will officially commence in the spring of 2011.
Wotherspoon says today; "this
is a chance for me to give something back to the sport that has been so good
for me, and it’s also going to be a big challenge but that’s just another
reason to be excited.” The academy will
unite speed skaters from various countries to train together in Inzell. With
coaches, resources and other opportunities that they wouldn’t have access to
otherwise. "I’ve watched skaters from
other countries throughout my skating career and I’ve seen that there are so
many things that I took for granted, and those things are luxuries for a lot of
other skaters. It’s obvious to me that
they are not realizing their potential” says Wotherspoon. "It is my goal to
make them better, and to help them maximize and achieve their potential”.Wotherspoon has always wanted to stay involved with speed skating after his retirement and this is the perfect opportunity. "I spoke to Marnix Wieberdink - the founder of Sport Navigator.NL - a couple of years ago and said that he should develop a project like this and that I definitely would help him if he did. I’m really motivated to make this happen with him. I’m thankful that Marnix had the will to start this ambitious project together with me.” Wotherspoon believes that this project is "a necessary step for our sport to grow and become more competitive world wide, the sport needs to develop beyond the borders it has now and this is the perfect opportunity.”
"Right from the start I’ve been impressed with Marnix’s efforts and plans. So far he’s followed through and he is changing the sport profoundly. I want to be involved with his next plan and that’s why I am, together with him, fully committed en dedicated to make the academy successful. I sincerely hope that we can be crucial in the personal development of the involved skaters" said an ambitious Wotherspoon.
"For me it came as a big surprise that a skating legend such as Jeremy Wotherspoon openly declared such a cooperation with me" said Marnix Wieberdink. "My own international training group was my original dream but we now already have our own building (Wieberdink recently bought the old hospital in Inzell) where we can host international skaters located in one of the most beautiful places in Europe, surpassing even my wildest dreams," said a delighted Wieberdink.
The official opening of the
academy is planned for the 10th of March, being the 1st
day of the World Championship Single Distance in Inzell.
